Website builders vs done-for-you, honestly
Most “best website builder” pages are affiliate theater. This one is not a ranking. It is the decision a builder comparison usually skips: whether you should be on a builder at all.

If you came here for a Wix-versus-Squarespace scorecard, leave with your money. Those pages exist to earn a commission on a monthly plan. The honest fork is earlier: is a builder the right product for the job, or do you need a site someone else is responsible for — written to rank, and built to book?
Vertana sells the second thing. That does not make the first thing a scam. It makes this a comparison with a conflict we will name up front.
When a builder is the right buy
A modern website builder is enough when most of these are true:
- You need a credible place to land referrals, not a site that has to win competitive service searches.
- You will actually log in and keep the copy current.
- The template is fast on a phone, and the text exists in the HTML — not only in a design canvas.
- You can export or leave. A site you do not own is a subscription with your reputation on it.
In that case, spend the weekend, pick the tool you can stand, and put your hours, services, and a booking link on it. The referral-only guide is the longer version of “maybe wait.”
When done-for-you is the better buy
Pay someone else when most of these are true:
- People already search for what you do, and you are invisible or outranked. That is an SEO job, and the site is the delivery vehicle.
- You need more than a brochure: booking, intake, signature, and payment on your domain, wired into tools you already run.
- The current builder locks the markup, ships a wall of unreadable divs, or makes every heading a design choice instead of a document.
- You will not do the writing. A builder does not invent the page for each service you sell.
That is the done-for-you website package: engineered to rank on Google and in answers like ChatGPT, then built as a front desk. The build is not the SEO. Ranking is monthly work after launch. Mixing those fees into one number makes both harder to judge — see what a small-business website costs and what SEO costs.
What builder pages get wrong
They rank themes. They skip the job. A beautiful template that cannot be rewritten, cannot carry structured data that matches the page, and cannot book a client is a brochure with a monthly bill. Assistants and crawlers are both worse at quoting a canvas than a document. If ChatGPT cannot read what you do, it cannot recommend you.
They also pretend the choice is brand A versus brand B. For an owner-operator the choice is usually: ship a page yourself this month, or pay for a site that is allowed to rank and to convert. Those are different products.
The honest middle
Plenty of businesses should start on a builder, get a Google Business Profile in order, and revisit the site when referrals start bouncing or the calendar has holes. Plenty of others are already losing work to a competitor whose site is merely readable. If you want the checklist rather than the make-or-buy, that is what a small business website should include.
We will not publish a ranked list of builders. We will tell you on a call whether the site you have can be saved.
Common questions
What is the best website builder for a small business?
The one you can edit, that stays fast, and that you can leave. For a brochure and a booking link, a modern builder is often enough. For a site that has to rank for services and book, sign, and take payment on your domain, the builder is usually the wrong unit. We do not rank the brands.
Is a done-for-you website better than building it yourself?
It is better when the job is ranking and conversion, not decoration, and when you will not do the writing, structure, and monthly SEO yourself. It is worse when you need a page up this weekend and a template already says what you sell.
Can Vertana work on a site I already built in a builder?
Often, yes, if the markup is editable and the pages can be rewritten. If the builder locks the HTML, hides the text from crawlers, or owns the platform, rebuilding is usually cheaper than fighting it. We tell you which one you are in before you spend.
