Fractional marketing and operations
Fractional marketing and operations, on a monthly retainer.
Most owner-operators who look up a fractional CMO or COO want the same thing: someone senior who owns growth and keeps the business running cleanly. Our monthly retainer gets you much of that, with the work done, not just directed.
Talk to JonThe benefit of a fractional hire, without hiring a title.
Most pages about fractional executives are written by fractional executives or by the marketplaces that place them, which is why they all conclude that you need one. We think most owner-operators need what the role delivers more than the role itself. We sell monthly SEO and the website it runs on, built like a front desk that books, signs, and takes payment. Jon owns the growth number and the operating side of it, the way a fractional lead would, and the work ships every month instead of landing as a plan.
That covers both halves of what owners usually want from a fractional hire: more customers, and a business that handles them without the owner doing every step by hand.
The two doors.
Growth-first readers come in looking for a CMO. Efficiency-first readers come in looking for a COO. In an owner-operated business those are usually the same door, and the same person walks through it.
Fractional CMO
The growth door
You have customers and want more of them. The marketing question: which channels, what offer, what to stop spending on. A fractional CMO directs that when there is already a team or a budget to direct.
Fractional COO
The efficiency door
You have more work than you can cleanly deliver. The operations question: what breaks at volume, who owns what, which process is eating the margin. A fractional COO owns that when there are enough people for process to be the problem.
That is the argument in marketing is operations.
People ask Google. They also ask ChatGPT.
The definition of these roles is now a search on both engines. Someone types “what is a fractional CMO” into Google. Someone else asks ChatGPT whether they need one. Pew Research Center put the share of US adults who have used an AI chatbot at 49% in February 2026, and four in ten adults use one to search for information.
Pew did not measure people hiring a fractional executive that way, and it did not measure people finding a local business. What it did measure is that a large share of adults now ask an assistant the question they used to type into Google. Those answers are only as honest as the pages they can quote. These pages exist so both engines have something true to read: when the title is worth it, when it is theatre, and what to buy instead.
Who this is for, and who should buy something else.
Read this if
You are comparing titles. Someone told you to hire a fractional CMO or COO, a marketplace emailed you, or an assistant named the role when you asked how to get help. You want a plain reading before you buy a person instead of the work.
Leave this page if
You are looking for a job, a placement board, or a firm that staffs part-time executives into $1M+ companies. We do not place fractional leaders. We sell a website, monthly SEO, and a front desk that books. Those are different products.
What to buy instead, most of the time.
If you are an owner-operator and customers find you through search, the constraint is rarely that nobody has a strategy. It is that the pages do not exist, the profile is half-claimed, and the website cannot take a booking. That is execution, and it is cheaper than a title.
Start with monthly SEO if being found on Google and ChatGPT is the problem, or the website package if the site itself is the leak. If people find you and then fall out of the process, that is the front-desk website. If you are weighing agencies generally, the honest comparison of what agencies do is on its own page.

- What is a fractional CMO?
The role, how it is priced, and the much more common case where an owner-operator needs execution rather than a marketing strategist.

Common questions.
- What does fractional mean?
- A senior person doing a defined slice of a job you cannot justify as a full-time hire. A fractional CMO might be two days a month. A fractional COO might be one day a week. You are buying judgment at a fraction of a salary, not a junior doing tasks.
- Does a small business need a fractional CMO or COO?
- Usually not yet. These roles earn their money where there is already a team to direct and a machine to tune. Below that, the constraint is almost never strategy. It is that nobody has done the work. Buying a strategist to supervise an empty pipeline is an expensive way to get a plan you cannot execute.
- Is Vertana a fractional CMO or COO firm?
- Not in the placement sense. We do not staff a part-time executive into your business. Our monthly retainer gets you much of what owners hire a fractional lead for: someone senior who owns the number, plus the work itself, the site, the SEO, and the front desk, done rather than delegated. If you grow into needing someone inside the business, that is a conversation we are happy to have.
- What is the difference between a fractional executive and a consultant?
- A consultant diagnoses and hands you a recommendation. A fractional executive holds the role: they own the outcome, sit in your meetings, and are accountable for the number. The word people search for is consultant. The thing they usually want is somebody who will actually run it.
