SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what actually changed
Three acronyms, one job, and a genuinely short list of differences. Written for an owner-operator being quoted for a service with a new name.

The honest summary first: these describe mostly the same work. If someone is selling you AEO or GEO as a separate line item on top of SEO, the burden is on them to name a task that was not already in scope. Usually they cannot. The monthly SEO we sell is the one job: get found on Google and in answers like ChatGPT. The acronyms are names for surfaces, not products.
That said, the distinctions are real enough to be worth ten minutes, because the surfaces behave differently even when the work does not.
AEO explained for a business owner
Answer engine optimization is a name for being the source a direct answer is built from. On Google that is a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, or a spoken result. The unit of success is being quoted, which sometimes means the person never clicks your link at all.
The work is ordinary SEO with a stricter reader. State the fact in the first sentence under the question. Put prices, hours, and service area in text. Make the page fast enough to be fetched. If an assistant or a snippet cannot lift a clean sentence, you will not be the answer, no matter how pretty the rest of the page is.
The glossary version is answer engine optimization. It is not a separate retainer, and it is not a ranking you can buy inside ChatGPT.
The three, plainly
SEO is being found in a results page. The unit of success is a link someone clicks.
AEO, answer engine optimization, is being the source a direct answer is built from: the featured snippet, the People Also Ask box, the voice result. The unit of success is being quoted, which sometimes means the user never clicks at all.
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the same ambition aimed at assistants that write a paragraph rather than list results. The unit of success is being named in that paragraph. The term page is generative engine optimization.
What is actually shared
All three run on the same foundation, and it is most of the job:
- The page has to be crawlable and fast enough to be fetched.
- The facts have to be in text. A price in an image is invisible to every one of these systems.
- The claims have to be corroborated somewhere else. A profile, a directory, a review, a mention.
- The writing has to be plain. Marketing language is hard to quote because it does not assert anything checkable.
What genuinely differs
Structure matters more for answers than for rankings. A question as a heading with a direct answer immediately beneath it is extractable. The same content as three flowing paragraphs ranks fine and gets quoted less.
Corroboration matters more for generative surfaces. A ranking page can stand largely on its own strength. An assistant deciding whether to name you is weighing whether the claim shows up consistently in more than one place.
You cannot measure it the same way. Rankings are checkable. Assistant mentions are not reported anywhere, vary by phrasing, and change without notice. Anyone promising you a GEO ranking report is selling a number they cannot source.
What to do about it
Nothing separate. Do the work once, properly, and it performs on all three surfaces, because all three are looking for a page that says true things clearly and is backed up elsewhere.
If you want the practical version for your own business, including how assistants actually pick a local business to recommend, that is how ChatGPT picks businesses to recommend. If the problem is more basic and you are not showing up anywhere, start with why your business is not showing up on Google. The offer those pages feed is monthly SEO for small business, not an AEO package.
Common questions
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO is getting found in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, is getting quoted in a direct answer rather than a list of links. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the same idea aimed at generative assistants like ChatGPT. The underlying work overlaps by roughly eighty percent: be crawlable, state facts plainly, be corroborated elsewhere.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Answer surfaces sit on top of the same index and the same crawl. A page an assistant cannot reach or parse is not a candidate to be quoted either. Everything that made a page rank still has to be true before any of the newer acronyms apply.
Should I pay for AEO or GEO as a separate service?
Be careful. Most of what is sold under those labels is standard technical and content SEO with a new invoice line. Ask what specific task is being done that would not already be in a competent SEO scope. If the answer is schema, clear headings, and factual copy, that is SEO, and you should not be billed twice for it.
Which one should a small business care about?
All of them, and none of them as a purchase. Do the work that makes you findable and quotable: a fast site, a claimed profile, prices and service areas stated in text, and reviews. That page performs in blue links and in assistant answers, because both systems are looking for the same thing.
