After-hours coverage without hiring anyone
The enquiry that arrives at 8pm is not lost because nobody answered. It is lost because there was nothing else for that person to do. Here are the five ways to fix that, cheapest first.

Evenings and weekends are when people who have jobs get around to sorting out their own lives. It is prime time for enquiries and dead time for one-person businesses, and the standard advice is to buy 24/7 answering. Sometimes that is right. Often it is buying a phone solution for a problem that is not about the phone.
Before choosing, look at your actual data: your call log and your website analytics, by hour. If a third of your enquiries land outside hours, this matters a lot. If it is two calls a month, spending hundreds a month on coverage is a poor trade.
One honesty note on the search results: pages for “after-hours answering service” are almost all the services themselves, so read them as sales pages. Vertana does not answer phones. If staffed overnight coverage is what the work requires, buy it from someone who staffs it.
Option 1: Let them book themselves
The cheapest and most underused option. Real availability on your website, bookable at 11pm without speaking to anyone. No per-minute billing, no script, no handoff, and it works while you sleep.
It also converts a group an answering service never reaches: the people who were never going to call in the first place. A large share of customers under about forty would rather book online than phone a stranger, and they do not leave a missed call behind when they give up. They simply go to whoever made it easy.
Suits: anything schedulable. Does not cover: genuine emergencies, or people who need reassurance before committing.
Option 2: Missed-call text back
A missed call triggers an automatic text within seconds. Built into many small business phone systems and CRMs, and cheap enough that there is little reason not to run it. Vertana does not sell missed-call text back. We mention it because it is the cheapest safety net most owners already have and almost never point at anything useful.
The detail that decides whether it works: what the text says. “Sorry we missed your call, we will get back to you” returns the person to waiting. “Sorry we missed you, here is my calendar, grab any time that suits” converts. Send them somewhere they can act — ideally the booking and intake path on your own site. A text without a next step is a good start and the wrong finish. The text is only useful if the booking link in it works.
Option 3: Answer the question before it is asked
A meaningful share of after-hours calls are not requests for service. They are people checking whether it is worth contacting you: do you cover my area, roughly what does this cost, do you handle this kind of job, how soon could you come.
Published on your site, those answers work at 3am for free. Left off it, they generate calls you then pay someone to answer, or worse, they generate a click back to the search results.
Option 4: An after-hours answering service
The real thing, and worth buying when the work genuinely is urgent. Established providers include AnswerConnect, MAP Communications, AnswerNet, and Smith.ai, most billing by minute or call with a monthly minimum. A person picks up, follows your script, and reaches you if it qualifies as an emergency.
Buy this if: a burst pipe, a lock-out, a medical or legal emergency, or a machine down overnight costs your customer real money. Skip it if: the honest answer to every after-hours call is “I will look at it tomorrow,” because you are then paying a premium for a message.
Option 5: An AI voice agent overnight
Cheaper than staffed coverage and increasingly capable on routine calls, which makes overnight a reasonable place to start with it: the volume is low and the calls are often simple. Test how it handles a confused or distressed caller before trusting it with the hours when nobody is checking. There is a fuller comparison here.
A sensible order
- Put real availability and honest answers on the website.
- Turn on missed-call text back, pointing at the booking link.
- Measure for a month. Count what actually still gets lost.
- Buy staffed or automated coverage for the calls that remain, if the money justifies it.
Most businesses that work through that order discover the remaining gap is much smaller than it felt, and much cheaper to cover.
Common questions
What is an after-hours answering service?
A service that answers your phone outside business hours, usually staffed by a call center or handled by a voice agent. Providers such as AnswerConnect, MAP Communications, Smith.ai, and AnswerNet all offer some form of it, typically billed by the minute or call with a monthly minimum.
Do I need 24/7 coverage for a small business?
Most owner-operators do not. What they need is for the evening enquiry not to vanish. If the work is genuinely emergency work, buy real coverage. If it is not, a website that books and an automatic text back recover most of the same value for a fraction of the cost.
What is the cheapest way to cover after hours?
Automatic missed-call text back, which is bundled into many phone systems for a few dollars a month, paired with a website that lets someone book without talking to you. Together they cost less than an hour of most answering services and work every night without anyone being on call.
How many calls come in after hours?
It varies enormously by trade, so measure yours rather than trusting an average. Your phone log and your website analytics will show you when people are actually trying to reach you, and that data should decide this, not a sales page.
Where we stand
We do not answer your phone. We build the website so that fewer calls need answering: it books the appointment, runs the intake, signs the agreement, and takes the payment, on your domain. That covers evenings and weekends by default, because a website does not keep hours. For the calls that genuinely need a human, buy an answering service and run both.
